Referring to genetics services
A detailed referral from a doctor is required for a person to be seen in a general genetics clinic (except our pre & early pregnancy screening clinic). In some circumstances, the doctor may be asked to provide further information or conduct additional tests before a referral can be accepted by a genetics clinic.
VCGS provides genetics clinic appointments:
- at The Royal Children’s Hospital (for children living in certain areas of metropolitan Melbourne)
- and in regional Victorian centres (for adults and children outside of Melbourne).
Referrals are allocated the appropriate clinic based on the reason for referral and location (e.g. metro or regional).
Referrals for Victorian adults with a personal or family history of cancer should be directed to a Familial Cancer Centre (metro and regional).
Referrals for the genetics clinic at The Royal Children’s Hospital or in regional Victoria can be faxed or emailed.
If you have a patient needing an urgent appointment, please contact our customer care team and ask to speak to the Duty Genetic Counsellor.
