Test & specimen information
Hydroxy butyrate
Overview
Beta-Hydroxybutyrate is the most prominent ketone present during diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This test can be used to diagnose DKA and monitor levels of ketones. Ketones can build up in the blood and urine and become toxic at high levels. Low levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate during hypoglycaemia may indicate an inborn error of fatty acid oxidation or ketone synthesis.
